About Sik City Skateboards
Sik City is a new company located in Brownsville,Vermont, and the only independent small skateboard company in the state. Santos, a stone mason, has turned his life-long love of skateboarding into a business he can enjoy even when the Vermont winters keep him from building stone walls.
Santos began skating in the late seventies in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. He stopped skating over twenty five years ago and restarted in the summer of 2007. “ I wish I had never stopped.
It’s great exercise and way more fun than the treadmill at the gym,” says Santos. “Skateboarding has changed a lot since we did it back in the seventies. The tricks that are being done these days are truly amazing!” The idea to form the skateboard company came to him while on vacation last summer, and he formed Sik City Skateboards in September, 2007.
Sik City refers to Turners Falls, Massachusetts, a small town in the western part of the state where Santos grew up. During the mid to late seventies skateboarding was booming in California, and skateboard magazines were his link to the West Coast skateboard scene. He read articles about Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, Shogo Kubo and others. In one of those articles he saw the Dog Town symbol (Venice, CA), which was a cross with the word Dog written horizontally and the word Town written vertically to form the cross. One of Santos’ friends helped to design the Sik City logo that is inspired by that cross. Sik City was a nickname given to Turners Falls by many of the skateboarders and kids growing up there at the time.
Sik City Skateboards are made in Maine of seven ply quality North American rock maple.
Santos supports the effort to make and distribute American-made skateboards rather than those made in China, which are cheaper but of poorer quality. N.A.S.B.M.A (North American Skateboard Manufacturers Association) is the organization spearheading the movement. Currently there is no labeling that tells the consumer the country of origin skateboard products are from. Sik City Products are currently available in nine retail outlets around New England, as well as in New York City.
